What you can do
Regular maintenance and stain prevention are key! An ounce of prevention... Vacuum your rugs regularly to catch any sand and soil on the surface of the Oriental rug before it has a chance to become deeply embedded. Vacuum the rug side-to-side to ensure that the fringe does not get caught. Keep a Rug First-Aid Kit on hand: club soda and white cotton towels. Spot clean spills (coffee, pop, wine or a pet stain) immediately. Place walk-off mats at your front door as they are excellent at keeping dirt from entering the home – and there-by being transferred onto your oriental carpet. Rotate the placement and orientation of your carpets every year to ensure that the entire rug wears evenly. Avoid direct exposure to hot sunlight (especially in summer) by closing your curtains or blinds; this will help protect the colors in your rug. If placing near a fireplace, be sure to use a hearth screen to keep sparks from damaging your rug.

Emergency Rug First Aid
A good emergency system is a very simple one, and all you need is club soda (or soda water) and white cotton towels. There is a tendency to grab a cleanser and scrub the area – DON’T! This inevitably causes more permanent harm than good to your carpet.

Blot – Rinse – Blot
Immediately blot the wet area with a white cotton towel. Scrubbing the affected area may lead to untwisting and breaks in the face fibers. Inspect the wet towel to ensure the liquid spill is absorbing into the towel, and also, to see that any of the rug’s dyes are NOT absorbing into the towel. If the rug’s dyes are absorbing into the towel, blot a bit more and then STOP. If further work is done, the dyes will bleed into each other. This type of damage can devalue your rug, so stop before the damage is increased. However, if the dye is not bleeding and only the spill is absorbed into the towel, then place a folded towel underneath the affected area and pour a small amount of club soda onto the area. Create a ‘sandwich’ by placing another towel to the top side of the rug. Stand on the upper towel for a few minutes to help to absorb the moisture from both sides. The sodium in the club soda absorbs the foreign spill and the towel then absorbs all the liquid. When you believe the absorption to be complete, elevate the treated area so that airflow can reach the back of the rug to help dry the foundation thoroughly. Do this for at least one day to ensure complete drying. The rug may feel dry to the touch, however, the cotton foundation can still have moisture within it, and without thorough air drying you could get mildew and dry rot. Once dry, bring your rug in to Royal Antique Rugs for evaluation and proper cleaning.
